Meet a Mentor – Durell

Mar 16, 2018 | Posted by Rinchen Dorji | Meet the Clubhouse Community, News, Uncategorized |

How did you connect with the Clubhouse?

I heard of about the Clubhouse through conversations with the new Clubhouse Coordinator, Annie. Currently working as a casual primary teacher after 5 years of full time teaching, volunteering in the community was a great way for me to spend my afternoons. The Clubhouse was a perfect fit for my passion of working with children and my interest in STEAM.

What kind of activities have you mentored or assisted with in your time at the Clubhouse?

I have been connected with the Clubhouse for the past 4 weeks, and I volunteer my time at least one afternoon a week. During my time at the clubhouse I have participated in the Humans of the Clubhouse project which is a photography exhibition that will be shown at Tuggeranong Hyperdome during the school holidays. I have also got involved in some photography creating paper cut out pictures, and botanical drawing.

A really fun project I was involved in was the creation of a small pin ball table. When first looking at the different pieces laid out on the table, I wasn’t sure how just a cardboard box, some paddle pop sticks, rubber bands, plastic cups, and a marble could be turned into an arcade game. It was really exciting to think creatively and innovatively to create a super fun game!

What have you found most rewarding about being a mentor at the Clubhouse?

As a classroom teacher, I have found it very rewarding being able to meet all the young people and get to know them. Working in this out-of-school space, it is a different experience teaching and learning than it is in a classroom. It’s inspiring being able to see the young people lead their learning, and what can be produced when they are given autonomy. Watching them journey through an idea, to problem solving, and a final product is very rewarding. I feel so proud to be able to assist these young people and would encourage anyone thinking about how to contribute to their community, to volunteer as a mentor at YWCA Canberra Clubhouse.

The Clubhouse always welcomes new mentors! If you have an interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math and would like to volunteer in the community, register your interest, contact our Clubhouse Coordinator, Annie-Lea Rowley, at annielea.rowley@ywca-canberra.org.au or on 0406 375 993.
